OUTBermuda promotes and supports the wellbeing, health, dignity, security, safety and protection of the LGBTQ community in Bermuda by proving educational resources on issues of diversity, inclusiveness, awareness and acceptance as regards LGBTQ people, and seeks generally to advance human rights, conflict resolution and the promotion of equality and diversity relating to the LGBTQ community in Bermuda.

In keeping with the organizations focus on equity and access, OUTBermuda is providing one (1) education bursary, with a priority on financial need, to a member of the LGBTQ community in Bermuda. This bursary reflects our mission to assist members in the LGBTQ community withfinancial support towards reaching their potential for success in their chosen career.

The award will be granted to those seeking enrollment at Bermuda College or an accredited international institution.

    Eligibility criteria

    • Identifies as a member of the LGBTQ community.
    • Age requirement is 17+
    • Award is intended for those attending Bermuda College or an accredited international institution.
    • Applicant needs to show proof of acceptance from the institution. Field of study is non-specific.
    • Level of study is to be a certificate programme or degree programme.
    • Must be Bermudian or a PRC holder and reside in Bermuda.
    • Applicant needs to have been educated in Bermuda for at least 5 years.

    Application Guidelines

    The OUTBermuda Education Bursary will be granted annually for a value of $10,000, to one (1) applicant. The purpose is to provide financial support to a person who identifies as a member of the LGBTQ community, who has a true financial need. The bursary funds are to be used to contribute to the costs of tuition, room and board, cost of travel, and course materials.

    Selection of Bursary Applicant

    Selection of the bursary applicant will be made by the OUTBermuda Bursary Committee, who will be guided by the following criteria:

    • Identifies as a member of the LGBTQ community.
    • Age 17+
    • Bermuda national or PRC who resides in Bermuda
    • Demonstrates true financial need
    • Applicant is pursuing a vocation that is practical and needed in Bermuda including trades, hospitality, nursing, visual and performing arts, architecture, engineering, landscaping/agriculture/horticulture, information technology, etc.

    OUTBermuda board - official observer appointment

    Successful applicant will be asked to join the OUTBermuda Board as an official observer for a period of one year from award of bursary.

    To be eligible for this bursary applicants must:

    • Complete the application form;
    • Provide proof that you are Bermudian or a PRC holder, reside in Bermuda, and are age 17+;
    • Provide evidence that you have been educated in Bermuda for at least 5 years;
    • Personal statement of financial need and that you identify as a member of the LGBTQ community;
    • A GED or High School Diploma is not mandatory for this application, but can be submitted;
    • Provide a resume or details of previous employment and volunteer experiences, memberships, and associations;
    • Provide at least two reference letters (academic, personal or employer are acceptable);
    • Provide letter of acceptance from specific institution;
    • Statement of educational, professional goals or objectives;
    • Submit an essay or video response to the following statement: ‘OUTBermuda seeks to promote diversity, inclusiveness, awareness and acceptance as regards LGBTQ people, and seeks generally to advance human rights, conflict resolution and the promotion of equality and diversity relating to the LGBTQ community in Bermuda. We would like to better understand how your experiences and values would help us to learn more about you and why this bursary is important to your academic success.’

    Short listed applicants may be expected to provide additional documentation as evidence of eligibility.

    The OUTBermuda Bursary Committee may decline to grant the Bursary should it decide, in its discretion, that there are no suitable applicants. The Committee reserves the right to withdraw award of the Bursary if a successful applicant becomes involved in any activity, which, in its opinion, places the esteem of the Bursary or OUTBermuda in jeopardy.
